Job Description
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to work in our Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality department. Our team works onsite with a 4x10 work schedule at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) facility with every Friday off.
You will report to the MFC Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Manager and will develop Fire Hazard Analysis for nuclear facilities, participate in design reviews for new facilities and modifications, review work control documents requiring advanced Fire Protection solutions, and provide fire protection support and expertise to MFC as the Fire Protection Engineer.
Responsibilities- Perform Fire Hazard Analysis and Facility Assessments for operations, processes, facilities, and structures, including fire dynamics calculations and professional judgment on fire/smoke spread and control.
- Analyze fire protection systems for adequacy, evaluate Life Safety Code for evacuation, and ensure compliance with DOE orders and standards in nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities.
- Identify, analyze, and mitigate Fire Protection related hazards in work organization design, operations, and maintenance, and review work control documents for appropriate incorporation of Fire Protection theories.
- Develop innovative and practical approaches to address deficiencies.
- Provide input and direction on laboratory‑level fire protection related performance measures, reports, and assessments.
- Maintain professional qualifications, including the INL Fire Protection Qualification, and keep up to date with new developments in fire protection.
- Review design activities for new or modified systems to ensure fire protection criteria are identified, included, and verified through acceptance testing; approve impairment closures and coordinate with the INL Fire Marshal.
- Conduct surveys, prepare corrective action or improvement reports, and provide cost estimates for fire protection deficiencies.
- Participate in the development of budgets for fire protection equipment and projects.
- Level 2:
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology, or related engineering technology from an ABET‑accredited program and 2 years experience, or a Master’s Degree in fire protection or related field. - Level 3:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related engineering field from an ABET‑accredited program with 5 years experience, or a Master’s Degree in fire protection or a related field and 2 years experience. - Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “L” clearance; US citizenship required.
- PE License in Fire Protection.
- Pay range:
Level 2 ($79,344 – $162,732) / Level 3 ($95,256 – $195,288). Compensation is determined by education, experience, and credentials. - TDP:
Requires a pre‑employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout employment. - Multi‑Level posting; placement is based on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and work in office, industrial, construction, and laboratory environments. Requires hand/finger dexterity for keyboard use, handling materials, and manipulating tools. Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Requires sufficient visual acuity and hearing.
