Position OverviewThe Estimator/Project Manager is responsible for accurately projecting the amount of materials, equipment, and man‑hours required to complete a project, creating a project budget, and presenting it to management. This role supports the Estimating Manager in coordinating DOT, Federal Highway, and municipal work within the department, ensuring all project details meet legal and company policies.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare detailed estimates through takeoff, past cost history, and collaboration with field personnel.
- Maintain backup files for estimate figures, including up‑to‑date supplier price information.
- Prepare and deliver bid reports and information packets to field teams for awarded bids.
- Review design options and recommend cost‑effective solutions.
- Follow company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations; report issues to management.
- Obtain minimum supervision for estimating items in own discipline.
- Independently estimate projects ranging from $1 million to $25 million.
- Lead estimation on projects of $25 million or greater with a team.
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies.
- Maintain regular, timely attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Engineering degree or equivalent technical training/experience.
- 3–7 years of construction experience with DOT, Federal Highway, and municipal projects.
- 3–7 years of construction estimating experience.
- 3–7 years of construction management experience.
- Experience with estimating software (e.g., B2W), spreadsheets, and CADD files.
- Proficiency with takeoff software and bidding software.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Strong blueprint, specification, and contract reading skills.
- Leadership, problem‑solving, decision‑making, and organizational skills.
- Professional ethics and courtesy in interactions with management, team members, vendors, and customers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capacity to travel as needed.
- Read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondences, and memos.
- Write clear correspondence.
- Present information effectively in one‑on‑one and small‑group settings.
- Perform basic arithmetic in all units of measure.
- Apply common sense to follow detailed written or oral instructions.
- Type accurately and use database software.
- Frequent sitting, climbing, and use of hands for equipment handling.
- Occasional standing, walking, crawling, kneeling, bending, and reaching above shoulders.
- Occasional lifting or moving up to 50 lbs.
- Vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
- Exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather, and extreme temperatures.
