As a Structural Engineer in the Reactor Project Engineering department at Idaho National Laboratory, you’ll shape the future of national energy supply by performing structural design and analysis of advanced nuclear reactors and associated systems. You’ll collaborate with world‑class scientists and engineers to develop designs that enable advanced nuclear reactors through multiple INL program sponsors. This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex, which hosts the core of the U.S. nuclear research and development capabilities with a diverse array of nuclear facilities and reactor experiment test beds.

In this role you will collaborate with multiple organizations within INL and external reactor developer partners. Our team works a 4x10 schedule with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions
  • Design and analyze structures to meet load requirements in accordance with the relevant codes and standards for advanced nuclear reactors and associated facilities and structures.
  • Review and determine adequacy of structural designs prepared by external organizations.
  • Perform and document design analysis using appropriate mathematical models.
  • Provide oversight of civil/structural engineering projects using construction expertise, structural steel and concrete work experience, and structural analysis.
  • Identify, promote, and develop plans for new project opportunities.
  • Develop design cost estimates and request resources to support work packages.
  • Confirm compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Develop acceptance criteria, inspection plans, and test plans.
  • Develop and issue installation and testing instructions.
  • Develop materials and parts lists and support procurement of materials, equipment, and services.
  • Develop relevant documentation including engineering design files (EDF), technical and functional design requirements (TFR), and system design descriptions (SDD).
  • Inspect existing projects and recommend repair and replacement of defective structures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the condition and performance of plant systems related to civil/structural engineering.
  • Recommend maintenance and repair standards and procedures.
  • Provide in‑field guidance on civil/structural engineering issues.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for civil/structural engineering matters.
  • Manage projects from pre‑construction to closeout.
  • Mentor and train junior engineering staff.
  • Coordinate and manage the activities of other staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by engineering manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of design and analysis techniques required by national consensus codes and standards relevant to civil/structural design.
  • Ability to interpret and create applicable technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools in construction or repair of structures.
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems.
  • Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
  • Level 3:
    Bachelor’s in civil/structural engineering or other related field from an ABET accredited institution and 5 years experience. Master’s and 2 years of experience. PhD and 2 years of experience.
  • Level 4:
    Bachelor's in civil/structural engineering or other related field and 9 years of experience. Master’s and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years of experience.
  • Depending on work assignment, experience with advanced programming languages (Python, C, SQL, Visual Basic, UNIX, etc.).
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Job Information
  • The pay range for this position is:
    Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288)/ Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
