Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a technical career as an Advanced Reactor Shift Supervisor. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is leading the nation’s efforts in the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. With the establishment of the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) and in partnership with multiple government and private reactor technology vendors, INL has recently taken multiple advanced reactors from the drawing board to reality, with plans to continue additional demonstrations.
In support of this expansion, multiple INL facilities are being constructed or re-purposed to house these reactors supporting a series of installation, startup, testing, and removal activities. The reactors will use groundbreaking technology and design requiring highly qualified Shift Supervisors to understand the reactor dynamics, reactivity control systems, balance of plant equipment, and operating sequences. These projects will be completed on accelerated timelines requiring staff to be involved in aspects of design, safety basis development, equipment layout and fabrication, training and procedure development, system operability testing, reactor fueling, transport, assembly, and disassembly.
This posting is primarily to support anticipated needs for the Project Pele Mobile Nuclear Power Plant demonstration, but additional opportunities within the MFC Reactors Division may be available.
- Supervise nuclear facilities operations personnel as well as personnel conducting maintenance and construction activities within the facility as authorized by the POD/POW to support the completion of mission goals.
- Provide supervision of on-going operations and ensure all work activities are conducted in accordance with approved procedures and the governing work control procedures.
- Act as the facility Building Emergency Director (BED) during Facility or Site Emergencies.
- Collaborate with and coordinate actions with the Emergency Action Manager (EAM) as the need arises for drills or actual emergencies.
- Interface directly with and provide work direction to the operations supervisor for safe and compliant completion of scheduled work activities related to Pele Mobile Nuclear Power Plant operations, including following procedural requirements, instructions, and work control
- Provides clear, well established, expectations. Provide recommendations for qualification programs where not currently in existence.
- Maintain facility configuration within authorized safety basis
- Responsible to implement all functions contained in the management model (organizing, planning, staffing, leading, accessing, and improving.)
Manager Level 2:
Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of proven experience in a nuclear, industrial, commercial environment.
OR a combination of 9 years education and experience for this position is acceptable. A min of 5 years in a group lead or supervisor position is required.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” clearance and
- Must hold or have previously held, an RO license/certification at a DOE, commercial, University, or Navy reactor. Navy Engineering Officer of the Watch or Engineering Watch Supervisor may also be used to fulfil this requirement.
- Able to obtain and maintain DOE Senior Reactor Operator certification and Rad Worker II qualification.
- Demonstrate ability to make sound judgement decisions through previous work assignments.
- Complete and maintain all certification requirements for nuclear area facility Shift Supervisors including supervisory skills training, comprehensive written examination, facility walk through exams and oral boards.
- Must have a proven track record of integrity, demonstrated strong work ethic, customer service mentality, and technical skills for the position.
