Job Description

Does a career focused on changing the world's energy future intrigue you? INL's Intelligent Automation & Advanced Analytics (IAAA) organization is seeking a small, high-impact team of professionals to help drive INL's advanced analytics and AI-enabled future.

IAAA is a leadership-endorsed strategic investment in INL's future, positioning the Laboratory to compete and excel in an era of accelerating technology change. Our team manages an enterprise data platform spanning billions of rows of data, delivers predictive & prescriptive analytics, agentic AI solutions and RPA automation that free staff for higher-value work, and builds the governance frameworks that make responsible AI adoption possible across a federal contractor environment.

We work a hybrid 9x80 schedule, primarily at our Idaho Falls facility.

What You'll Be Part Of:

This team sits within our Centers of Excellence model, driving intake, prioritization, and community-building around automation and analytics work across the Laboratory. You'll help identify high-value use cases, build proofs of concept, and deliver production-grade solutions that support everyone from research directorates to business operations teams.

Open Roles:

Data Scientist — Develop statistical models, machine learning solutions, and predictive analytics that turn INL's enterprise data into forward-looking, decision-ready insight. You'll partner directly with business units to translate open-ended questions into rigorous, actionable analysis.

AI Developer — Design, build, and deploy agentic AI and automation solutions (including RPA bots and AI-enabled workflows) that eliminate repetitive manual work and extend human capacity. You'll own the solution lifecycle from proof of concept through production monitoring and continuous improvement.

Data Engineer — Build and operate the pipelines, integrations, and quality controls that move data reliably through INL's bronze, silver, and gold data layers. You'll ensure the data platform stays trustworthy, timely, and available to every downstream analytics and AI consumer.

Business/Data Analyst — Bridge the gap between business needs and technical delivery by gathering requirements, mapping current-state processes, and identifying the highest-value automation and analytics opportunities across the Laboratory's directorates.

These are project-based roles, slated for approximately 1 year, but any or all may transition into permanent roles, depending on ongoing need(s) and/or impact.

Why This Team:

You'll help build the systems and solutions that let INL's scientists and staff spend less time on manual, repetitive work and more time advancing the Laboratory's national energy and security mission. Your work will directly support responsible, well-governed AI adoption at a national laboratory — with the chance to see your automation and analytics solutions used lab-wide, not just by a single team.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (data science, computer science, statistics, engineering, or related) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with modern data, analytics, or automation tools and techniques. An advanced degree is a plus.
  • Familiarity with governance, center-of-excellence models, or intake/prioritization processes a plus.
  • Strong communication skills — you'll work directly with stakeholders across research, operations, and business functions.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into scoped, deliverable technical solutions.
  • Comfort operating in a regulated, federal contractor environment where responsible AI governance matters as much as capability.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE level "L" security clearance, requires US Citizenship.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard and type, reach with hands and arms, and operate job related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the…
