Duties And Responsibilities
  • Deliver safe, high quality hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments for hospitalized patients, including those who are acutely ill, hemodynamically unstable, or experiencing renal complications related to surgery, infection, trauma, or chronic disease.
  • Perform comprehensive pre‑treatment assessments, evaluating vital signs, fluid status, lab values, vascular access function, and overall readiness for dialysis.
  • Monitor patients continuously during treatment, identifying early signs of complications such as hypotension, arrhythmias, cramping, access malfunction, or changes in mental status, and intervening promptly using established clinical protocols.
  • Manage all aspects of vascular access, including assessment of AV fistulas and grafts, sterile care of central venous catheters, cannulation, decannulation, and troubleshooting issues such as infiltration, clotting, or poor flow.
  • Coordinate care with nephrologists and the broader inpatient team, ensuring timely communication of patient status, treatment outcomes, and any concerns requiring medical attention.
  • Document all aspects of dialysis care accurately and thoroughly in the electronic medical record, including assessments, interventions, patient responses, machine parameters, and post‑treatment evaluations.
  • Educate patients and families on dialysis procedures, fluid and dietary restrictions, access care, and expectations for ongoing renal treatment, adapting explanations to the patient’s level of understanding.
  • Prepare, operate, and maintain dialysis equipment, ensuring proper setup, calibration, disinfection, and troubleshooting in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.
  • Adhere to strict infection prevention protocols, including aseptic technique, PPE use, water quality standards, and environmental cleaning requirements specific to dialysis.
  • Support transitions of care, collaborating with case managers and outpatient dialysis teams to ensure continuity for patients returning to chronic dialysis or initiating long‑term renal replacement therapy.
