The Analytical Chemistry team within the Analytical Chemistry & Characterization department, part of the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate, is seeking a Lead Professional – Analytical Chemist to join our Idaho Falls facility. Our team follows a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research to improve existing and advance new capabilities and methodologies for reviewing and interpreting data in areas of specialty such as nuclear science, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometric detection, radio bioassay, etc.
  • Design and participate in experiments to acquire data that will support scientific improvements and evaluate new research concepts.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, operations, and other technical resources.
  • Serve as a technical liaison with other divisions regarding analytical capabilities, interfacing directly with laboratory R&D customers, project principal investigators, and line management.
  • Identify new research opportunities and develop concepts for new products and services for potential research sponsors. Lead proposal generation and interface with intramural researchers to specify measurement science projects that support their larger goals.
  • Communicate results to internal and external sponsors via written technical reports and oral presentations.
  • Generate reports and provide materials for documentation; write research proposals to secure new funding.
  • Develop or recommend changes in program processes and procedures; ensure onsite support practices meet the requirements of the quality assurance plan and that quality control provision requirements are implemented at required frequencies.
  • Prepare radiological samples in hot cells, glove boxes, or radiological fume hoods.
Lead Professional Responsibilities (20%)
  • Approve staff timecard entries.
  • Coordinate with the Department Manager to set and approve performance goals.
  • Complete and present staff performance reviews in collaboration with the Department Manager, ensuring written input is shared and approved before finalizing.
  • Assign staff to projects in coordination with the project PI, funds manager, and Department Manager; make changes to employee work scope when needed.
  • Mentor staff.
  • Engage with the Department Manager in setting professional development plans.
  • Provide input to the Department Manager on recommendations for future staffing needs, promotions, out‑of‑cycle merit, and standard merit increases.
  • Attend intake meetings for new hires.
  • Participate in interviews for new hires.
  • Support the Department Manager in corrective actions with direct reports.
  • Act on behalf of the Department Manager upon request.
Required Qualifications
  • Level 3:
    Ph.D. in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related field from an accredited institution and at least 2 years of related experience.
  • Level 4:
    Ph.D. in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related field from an accredited institution and at least 4 years of related experience.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use stairs, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity are required.

Job Information
  • Pay range:
    Level 3 ($95,256 – $195,288) / Level 4 ($114,360 – $234,336). Compensation decisions use factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • Multi‑Level posting – placement depends on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
