Job
Position OverviewThis is a skilled position responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner on roadway, highway, and infrastructure construction projects. This position requires experience operating a motor grader to perform fine grading, shaping, and finishing of road surfaces to meet project specifications and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment such as road graders, loaders, excavators, bulldozers, haul trucks, and other machinery as assigned.
- Perform pre- and post-operation inspections to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
- Monitor equipment performance and make operational adjustments to maintain productivity and efficiency.
- Follow all safety procedures, company policies, and MSHA/OSHA regulations.
- Load, transport, and stockpile materials according to production requirements and assist with site preparation, grading, and material handling tasks.
- Conduct basic maintenance and minor repairs; report major issues to maintenance personnel.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Collaborate with supervisors and team members to meet production and project goals.
- Complete required daily logs, inspection reports, and production records.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience operating a motor grader in road construction required.
- 1-3 years experience in heavy civil construction, roadway, or highway projects strongly preferred.
- Experience in construction, aggregates, or related industries is a plus.
- Working knowledge of equipment safety practices and procedures.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic troubleshooting.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL may be preferred depending on role.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends as needed.
- Strong understanding of grading techniques, drainage, and road construction processes.
- Ability to operate grader with precision to meet tolerances and project specs.
- Familiarity with GPS machine control systems (Topcon, Trimble, etc.) a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance.
- Strong awareness of jobsite safety practices and hazard recognition.
- Valid Driver’s License is preferred.

The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
