POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Ropes Coordinator is responsible for supervising Ropes Specialists as they plan, lead, and implement Challenge course programs, for campers ages 5-17 for an assigned group of campers. The Ropes Coordinator creates a safe and encouraging environment in all ropes course areas:
Low Ropes Course, High Ropes Course, and Zip line. Collaborates with Camp Director and the leadership team to create a cohesive and positive summer camp team. This position is also accountable for the general safety and empowering the personal growth and skill development of the participants in their group. The Ropes Coordinator exhibits enthusiasm and patience while exemplifying the Girl Scout core values of honesty, caring, courage, and character.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION
- Assists in providing ten days of staff training prior to the arrival of campers
- Uphold the safety standards required to ensure a safe operation of all challenge course elements
- Ensures ropes staff attend to safety of campers at all times; follows and instructs ropes staff on procedures for incidents and emergencies
- Provides general supervision of all camp staff in their daily and weekly work, provides regular feedback and encouragement
- Works to create a positive group culture through team-building and problem-solving activities
- Ensures ropes staff are scheduling and carrying out weekly age-appropriate programming requirements in various challenge course settings: low ropes course, high ropes course, and zip line
- Instructs Ropes Staff on how to teach and encourage campers to progress in independent and group living skills such as caring for equipment, proper use of supplies and equipment, clean up and following safety guidelines
- Instructs Ropes Staff on how to plan, prepare, and implement age-appropriate programming and curriculum
- Works with the leadership team to build out a weekly schedule of programs for the camp.
- Models how to engage all campers in games, crafts, or other activities at all times (including during the girls’ down time, meals, all-camp activities, clean-up, etc.)
- Attends all meals with campers in the dining hall or during cook‑outs. Teaches and models table manners, appropriate meal conversation and positive social interactions.
- Instructs and coaches unit staff to provide opportunities for girls to lead during all activities and “camper planning” meetings
- Models and instructs on personal responsibilities such as conflict management, positive relationships, following rules, and respecting camp property
- Follows and implements appropriate behavior management procedures with all campers. Supports Unit Staff to increase their skills and assist with challenging camper behavior that may present itself
- Completes and submits all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner, encouraging Program staff Unit Leaders to do the same
- Exhibits punctuality and communication in time management, including daily and weekly breaks
- Respects and follows the “Camp is for the camper” philosophy by attending to camper, staff and camp needs first
- Represents camp appropriately in the community and with parents by maintaining personal hygiene, following camp dress code, and communicating respectfully with campers, parents and other adults.
- Actively participates in staff trainings, meetings, and camp closing activities, including but not limited to deep cleaning, lifting or moving equipment, taking out trash and closing inventory
- Reports concerns and incidents to Camp Director
- Practices the Girl Scout Promise and Law with an inclusive attitude and a willingness to problem‑solve
- Leads weekly scheduling meetings with Unit Leaders. Address staff supervisory issues, providing support and advice to supervisors.
- Scheduled Ropes Specialists to ensure all challenge course elements have adequate staff when in use
- Ensures program spaces are safe, stocked, and ready for use by units
- Follows all procedures and regulations according to the GSEWNI Council, GSUSA, and state and federal guidelines and laws and the American Camp Association
