About the Role
Brooklyn Public Library Services for Older Adults is seeking part‑time Senior Assistants who will provide quality programs for older adults at designated branches and senior sites throughout Brooklyn. Under the direction of the Services for Older Adults Program Outreach Associate, Senior Assistants will build meaningful social engagement for our diverse 50+ audience. The position requires up to 10 hours per week at $16.50 per hour and involves travel to assigned branches or senior sites.
Responsibilities- Plan and present programs and activities for older adults, encouraging patron participation and stimulating use of the library.
- Use the selected curriculum to plan and conduct programs for participants 50+ and their caregivers.
- Provide feedback to the Program Outreach Associate regarding participation, curriculum, teaching artists and materials.
- Assist teaching artists at Creative Aging program locations, distributing necessary supplies and collecting/storing materials after each session.
- Gather attendance, surveys and other evaluation data from participants.
- Coordinate and prepare programs with the assigned branch or senior site prior to each session.
- Communicate regularly and provide feedback with the Services for Older Adults team; manage administrative duties such as timesheets and statistics.
- Conduct model programs for staff observation as needed.
- Promote programs and distribute promotional materials about Services for Older Adults.
- Represent Brooklyn Public Library Services for Older Adults at community meetings and outreach activities as required.
- Utilize connections with BPL resources and other service providers to assist older adults.
- Facilitate skill building among older adults in areas such as technology, arts, or job search.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work as a team and meet the needs of patrons with and without disabilities.
- Desire to work with older adults and people with disabilities.
- Relatable to the target demographic served.
- Ability to take orders and pay attention to details.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel.
- Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed.
- Computer skills required: email, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and other virtual platforms.
- Experience assisting older adults with technological needs such as iPhone, Android, smartphones, computer support, Google Suite, Microsoft
365, Outlook, Gmail, virtual meetings and social media. - Bilingual language skills preferred, including Sign Language, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cantonese, Mandarin, Bengali, Urdu, Polish and Russian.
- Other qualifications as required.
Part‑time position, up to 10 hours per week at $16.50 per hour.
