Teaching Assistant – Adult Learning Program
The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program seeks a Teaching Assistant to assist WIOA program participants earn their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma through one of four pathways (GED, Regents, NEDP, or prep classes). This part‑time position is paid at $25 per hour for up to a 19‑hour workweek and is funded through June 30, 2027.
Responsibilities- Engage students in a learning community and co‑facilitate reading and writing instruction within Pre‑HSE/HSE classrooms; collaborate with instructors and students to support and enhance lesson plans with a focus on developing math, reading, writing, English language literacy, and workplace literacy skills.
- Guide participants through individualized lesson plans and support them to reach the goal of obtaining their HSE diploma.
- Use motivational skills and strategies to encourage participants to learn and keep them engaged.
- Instruct, guide, educate, and evaluate participants’ work.
- Maintain record‑keeping and data entry of participants’ attendance and documentation of progress as required.
- Assist with outreach, registration, assessments, orientation, and follow‑up, including online assessments and self‑assessment rubrics, checklists, and portfolios.
- Assist participants with applying for the GED exam, monitor attendance records and progress; produce progress reports and ensure timely data entry.
- Stay abreast of adult education skills and training to ensure participants have a positive learning experience.
- Attend required NYC RAEN training and internal monthly team meetings.
- Provide guidance and support to instructional staff and reinforce participants’ skills to ensure success on the TABE assessment.
- Travel to multiple locations as needed.
- Minimum of a high school diploma and/or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of ABE/HSE skills to support students and instructors.
- Excellent computer skills and ability to work with multiple learning management platforms such as Schoology and Google Classroom.
- Successful experience working in an adult education learning environment.
- Strong motivation to stay current with new technologies and adult education skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced team environment and have strong organizational, communication, and technology skills.
- Ability to travel to multiple locations when required.
Schedule:
M/W 10–2, T/TH 3–8, and some Saturdays 10–4 (subject to change). Locations vary from Central, Eastern Parkway, New Lots, Flatbush, Pacific, Bedford, and other satellite branches.
