Our Wendell, NC headquarters for Siemens Electrification & Automation delivers energy distribution systems and solutions nationwide. We power today’s grids and invest in future grid innovations. We’re seeking experienced professionals in power transmission and distribution, specializing in substation automation and protection relay engineering, to join our Power Systems Engineering team.

Senior Power System Protection Engineer – Wendell, NC (Relocation provided) Responsibilities
  • Design, configure, and test protective relay systems for complex power systems and substations, ensuring high reliability and system integrity.
  • Execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), preparing comprehensive test procedures, commissioning scripts, and driving successful project delivery.
  • Operate advanced relay test equipment such as Omicron and Doble, and possess deep knowledge of protection schemes for transmission, distribution, and industrial applications.
  • Develop and implement protection and control schemes that align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer‑specific needs.
  • Act as a proactive technical leader and collaborator, guiding project teams, solving complex challenges, and driving results through all phases of the project lifecycle—from initial design to final commissioning.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with clients, providing on‑site support, troubleshooting, and commissioning expertise focused on performance and customer satisfaction.
Basic Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic, or computer science engineering.
  • 4+ years of engineering experience, preferably in power systems protection engineering.
  • Project Technical Lead experience.
  • Ability to read and fully understand DC and AC schematics, three‑ and one‑line diagrams for medium and/or high voltage substation systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one relay product and associated software from vendors such as Siemens, GE, SEL, or ABB.
  • Applied knowledge of protection schemes including Overcurrent/Over‑Under voltage, Transformer Differential, Motor Protection, High and Low Impedance Busbar Differential, Generator Protection, MV transfer schemes and reverse interlocking schemes.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as IEC
    61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SMV), DNP, Modbus, IEC
    103, IEC
    101, IEC
    104, Profinet, and Profibus.
  • Commissioning experience for control and protection systems.
  • Factory and site testing experience in automation and control systems.
  • Expect to travel 50‑70% depending on project assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced protection knowledge for High Voltage Line Differential and Distance Protection.
  • Experience with generator protection of large generating units.
  • Communication network technologies, including design, configuration, and troubleshooting of Ethernet switches for protection applications such as IEC‑61850 Process Bus and GOOSE.
  • Advanced programming skills and experience with programming languages used in protection systems.
