Position Summary
The EHS Specialist is responsible for ensuring a workplace complies with all applicable EHS regulations by conducting audits, developing safety plans, training employees on proper procedures, and actively identifying and mitigating potential hazards to protect employee health and the environment, all while adhering to federal, state, and local laws. The incumbent will investigate incidents to prevent future occurrences, aiming to minimize workplace hazards to maintain a culture of safety within the organization and support the implementation of EHS programs.
PrincipalResponsibilities
- Cultivates a strong understanding of the day-to-day operating requirements of the assigned area, seeking opportunities to continually improve local EHS culture, customer safety & service, and operations efficiency.
- Maintains and ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local Environmental Health and safety (EHS) regulations for the assigned area, BU, and/or division(s).
- Supports assigned locations in executing EHS Management Systems, Serious Injury and Prevention initiatives, and EHS Absolutes through education and training.
- Advises supervisors and employees regarding all EHS programs, exposure identification, monthly housekeeping, inspections of facilities and equipment, and identification, classification, and reporting of incidents and potential hazards and risks.
- Leads, coordinates and participates in incident investigations and follow-up incident reporting for the division.
- Collaborates with operations and functional leaders to define a roadmap towards EHS goals.
- Assists division management in coordinating required environmental data collection activities, field inspections, recordkeeping, and reporting requirements to comply with air and water pollution permits and all federal, state, and local environmental protection agencies’ rules and regulations.
- Ensures all databases are maintained with accuracy and up-to-date information, holding Division staff accountable for keeping data and reporting compliant per industry requirements.
- Schedules and attends (or assist in facilitating) required inspections and employee testing. Reviews resulting documentation to assure noted issues are clear and concise.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned or apparent.
- Working knowledge of EHS regulations and compliance.
- Knowledge of the waste industry or a subscription-based industry.
- Knowledge of safety management systems and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and hazard analysis skills.
- Proficient in developing and managing injury/illness case management programs.
- Familiarity with investigating incidents and using root cause analysis techniques.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to influence in a highly matrixed environment.
- Demonstrates attention to detail, organization, and deliverables, including driving projects to completion in accordance with established timelines.
- Safety Professional (CSP), Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) – preferred.
- 2 – 4 years of experience in EHS program development, safety management, and implementation.
The pay range for this position is $86,400.00 to $
* which reflects the minimum wage in multiple jurisdictions. The actual range will depend on the locality in which you are hired.
