Overview

This role is a non-operational, line‑management position with responsibilities focused on risk assessment, supervision, research and clinical services for youth and adult populations within the HMP YCS system.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct full case reviews on difficult cases and advise on sentence planning.
  • Specialise in delivering psychology services in therapeutic community wings or PIPEs.
  • Lead, supervise and facilitate group sessions.
  • Offer professional opinion to multi‑functional teams and produce offender reports (e.g., risk, parole, high‑risk or vulnerable offenders).
  • Develop strategies for sexual offending and indeterminate sentence assessment and intervention.
  • Deliver and supervise complex programmes, such as healthy sex programmes.
  • Provide consultancy support to senior management and other staff on psychology services and outcomes.
  • Conduct relevant research, including data gathering and analysis.
  • Act as a professional or expert witness in parole board hearings and court proceedings.
  • Provide professional supervision to trainee forensic psychology staff and other intervention staff.
  • Assist in national specialist tasks such as training on courses related to the specialist discipline.
  • Ensure staff are developed in accordance with key competencies and gateways and maintain consistency across the team.
  • Lead on risk assessment and risk management of complex, vulnerable or high‑risk offenders, providing feedback to individuals and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to offender management processes, including ACCT and self‑harm or personality disorder assessments.
  • Provide consultancy to wider teams and advise on complex cases at multiple sites.
  • Act as a negotiation adviser where suitable and experience has been demonstrated.
  • Maintain own CPD requirements and professional standards, including HCPC registration.
  • Provide psychological contributions to broader service activities such as therapeutic communities or regime activities.
  • Produce psychological reports for life‑sentence convictions within the required timeframe.
  • Manage relevant accreditation audit baselines.
  • Line‑manage trainee psychologists.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Professional background in Psychology, preferably with a Chartered Psychologist title and full membership of the relevant BPS division.
  • Registered Practitioner Psychologist with HCPC and entitled to use a protected title.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision and completed training in evidence‑based treatment models.
  • At least 18 months of post‑registration experience, with a preference for two years; candidates are eligible once they have completed the required registration period.
  • Experience working with children involved in the youth justice system is desirable.
