Job Summary
Responsible for obtaining and reporting laboratory results in an accurate and efficient manner as outlined in the laboratory policy and procedure manual.
Essential Job Functions- Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases, and enter findings into computer.
- Set up, adjust, maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment.
- Analyze the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical and electrical devices.
- Conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes and perform blood counts.
- Obtain specimens, cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms for analysis.
- Examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities.
- Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
- Consult with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found.
- Perform and report laboratory tests in an accurate and efficient manner to assure patients are treated knowledgeably.
- Communicate clearly and record accurately any orders received via the telephone to assure the correct tests are performed and diagnoses are recorded.
- At all times prioritize and organize work to assure turnaround times are acceptable.
- Operate and perform periodic maintenance on all laboratory instrumentation to assure proper performance.
- Rotate call and work weekends as assigned to ensure 24hr/7dy coverage of the department.
- Participate in mandatory training on EHR and Empower (Time & Attendance) and demonstrate basic competency in the functions applicable to the role.
- Must be able to work effectively with all hospital departments and providers' offices.
- Demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times to ensure the hospital runs smoothly.
- Position requires access to highly confidential information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Completion of an acceptable Medical Technology Bachelor's degree program and accreditation through AMT or ASCP.
- Possess a current license to perform laboratory testing.
- Position requires a minimum of two years experience working in a hospital setting as a generalist with experience in Microbiology, Bood Banking, Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, and Phlebotomy.
- Must have good auditory, verbal and written ability.
- Must be able to hear and understand verbal orders.
