Overview
At Caribou Medical Center, we’re seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist/Tech to join our laboratory team as a PRN. In this role, you’ll perform diagnostic testing, analyze samples, and ensure accurate, timely results to support patient care. Core Responsibilities- Performs diagnostic laboratory tests in the areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, microbiology, serology and coagulation. Also obtains appropriate blood and body fluid samples from patients.
- Uses established methods and techniques for laboratory analysis.
- Adheres to strict safety regulations ensuring protection against blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious agents for laboratory staff, hospital staff and patients.
- Maintains strict quality control checks on all instruments, test kits and microorganisms used in laboratory analysis.
- Follows established procedures and protocols for all test results that fall into the critical value category.
- Maintains competency in routine patient test performance, patient preparation, specimen handling and processing, recording and reporting of test results, and instrument maintenance and function checks.
- Exhibits problem‑solving skills and attention to detail during daily laboratory operation.
- Participates in proficiency testing as assigned and in a timely manner.
- Maintains Idaho State licensure competency by meeting required continuing education standards annually.
- Ensures the appropriateness, timeliness and integrity of laboratory specimens and test results. Interfaces with physicians and all clinical and allied health disciplines to ensure orders are followed appropriately, and facilitates specimen requests and reporting mechanisms.
- Cooperates in the operation of a 24‑hour, 7‑day laboratory operation, maintaining productivity during high‑volume demands, displaying flexibility in the work schedule, assisting in training new laboratory employees, and establishing and implementing new methodologies and test kits. Assumes quality‑control responsibilities for the area.
- Participates in and contributes to the Antibiotic Stewardship program.
- Supports Laboratory Information Systems: provides implementation and maintenance of LIS, performs validation procedures and documentation, maintains dictionaries and interfaces, assists training, writes and maintains LIS procedures, tests and implements instrument interfaces and reference interfaces, coordinates computer upgrades, maintains report format, manages middleware, customizes reports, assists with charge codes and CPT changes, monitors billing discrepancies for Medicare/Medicaid, and ensures accurate billing for customers.
- Shows good critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
This job operates in a hospital setting. The role requires regular walking throughout the hospital and may involve contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. There is risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, latex, chemicals, and unpredictable behavior from residents, patients, and families.
Requirements Required- Associate’s degree in Medical Lab Technology (MLT) and MLT certification through ASCP or equivalent accreditation organization. Completion of an accredited Medical Technology internship or equivalent experience. Strong computer skills with proficiency in word processing and data entry. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills. Detail‑oriented with excellent organizational skills.
- OR Baccalaureate degree in Medical Lab Science (MLS) or related science with the same qualifications.
- Experience with implementation and maintenance of Laboratory Information software. BLS Certification.
