RequirementsThe Medical-Surgical RN provides direct patient care, coordinates treatment plans, and ensures high-quality nursing services for patients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. This role requires strong clinical judgment, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
Responsibilities- Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; following facility standards of care set by the State Board of Nursing and other governing agency regulations. Possess knowledge and skills regarding nursing principals and practice.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in accordance with hospital policies; make nursing decisions within the scope of licensure.
- Administer medications, treatments, and IV therapy as per physician order.
- Monitor vital signs, symptoms, and patient progress, reporting changes promptly.
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, discharge instructions and health management.
- Maintain accurate documentation in electronic health records (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
- Monitor patient progress, document assessments and adjust care plans accordingly.
- Assist with post-operative recovery, chronic illness management, and acute care interventions.
- Respond to emergencies and coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Organizational skills, with ability to prioritize with accuracy and speed.
- Attend 75% of nursing staff meetings and other available in-service education that pertain to professional growth and development.
- Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
- Promote patient independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patients, friends, and family to understand their condition, medications, and self‑care skills; answering questions.
- Document patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
- Maintain continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Delegate and oversee tasks delegated to nursing assistants, ESTs and Unit Clerks.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License in the State of Idaho or approved compact state licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire.
- Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certification required up on date of hire.
- Pediatric Life Support (PALS) certification required within a year of date of hire.
