Description Harriman State Park is searching for a dedicated and hands-on individual to become an integral part of our team as a Park Ranger with a primary focus on maintenance, complemented by other essential ranger duties.

Harriman State Park spans 11,700 acres within a wildlife refuge in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. It’s known for its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and historic Railroad Ranch once owned by Union Pacific investors. Visitors come year-round to enjoy 34 miles of trails that wind through meadows and forests, fly fishing on the renowned Henrys Fork, rustic overnight facilities, and winter activities like Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking.

In this dynamic role, you will primarily focus on essential maintenance tasks, ensuring that this natural wonder remains pristine and accessible to all who seek the great outdoors. In addition to maintenance, you will also be responsible for various ranger duties, including code enforcement, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of park visitors. The ideal candidate is reliable, self-directed, has a background in equipment operation and maintenance, possesses strong organizational skills and is comfortable working in challenging outdoor conditions year-round. Experience in vehicle maintenance, building repairs, and light trade crafts are preferred.

1. Visitor Services and Resource Protection.

  • Provides information to visitors and the public regarding park history and geology, plants, animals, and recreational opportunities.
  • Conducts nature walks and interpretive programs.
  • Develops and presents interpretive and environmental awareness programs for park visitors, school groups, and organizations.
  • Performs research for programs and displays Informs visitors of pertinent regulations of the Department as well as other partner organizations such as the Department of Fish and Game and Department of Lands.
  • Collects fees.
  • Ensures compliance with outdoor recreation program and park rules and regulations.
  • Works with local enforcement agencies to give warnings.
  • Patrols park to protect and preserve park resources from vandalism and abuse.
  • Promotes public safety.
  • Serves as liaison between the park and other enforcement agencies.
  • Administers first aid
  • Organizes, markets, and implements special events.

2. Administrative.

  • Works with other park staff to hire, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal employees and volunteers.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, expense transmittals, records, logs, and inventories.
  • Purchases supplies and materials.
  • Prepares research reports and procedure manuals.
  • May represent the department at meetings with the public, user, and/or special interest groups and partner agencies.
  • Assists with coordinating trainings such as chainsaw and snowmobile safety courses.
  • Sources trail maintenance materials, and tracks seasonal trail needs.
  • Acts as lead for trail-focused planning and reporting, including winter grooming and summer trail improvement initiatives.

3. Park Maintenance.

  • Maintains park facilities, trail systems, and grounds to ensure resource preservation and visitor safety.
  • Performs a variety of basic craft activities including erosion control, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry.
