Posting Context Statement:
The Research Specialist (RS) will support AVFS faculty stationed in Twin Falls, Kimberly, and in the Magic Valley area in conducting research on dairy animal science, with emphases on animal production, environmental impact, health and physiology, and data-driven livestock management. The RS will support lab, field, and on-farm studies, assist in data collection and analysis, and help implement protocols in coordination with regional dairy producers.
The RS will also support outreach and extension objectives.
Performs research activities and analysis, recording observations and measurements, and reports results. Participates in analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision.
Duties- Prepare standard solutions for calibration and analyses
- Interpret test results and compare with determined standards and limits
- Collect laboratory or field data
- Conduct research and analysis of scientific data
- Perform literature reviews
- Prepare reports
- Compare data and historical records for trend verification
- Develop reference files, comparison charts, and graphs on research data
- Assist with site inspections and field oversight
- Have little or no supervisory responsibilities
- Follow pre-established procedures or protocols
- Collect and review scientific data
- Keep complete and accurate records
- Work in a team environment
- Bachelor’s Degree in animal science, agricultural science, environmental science, or related to the domain of this position
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet requirements for driving university vehicles
- Ability to travel
- Ability to work an alternate schedule or shift as requested by supervisor
- Master’s degree in animal science, dairy science, or related field
- Experience in animal handling, livestock care, and field or laboratory sample collection
- Skilled in operating and maintaining research or farm equipment
- Proficient with dairy herd management software, environmental sensors, and on-farm data collection systems
- Familiar with laboratory assays, gas or nutrient analyses, and emission monitoring methods
- Competent in data analysis and statistical modeling using R, SAS, or similar tools
- Effective working independently, collaboratively, and in supervisory roles
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Ability to carry, lift, and/or otherwise move heavy materials up to 50 pounds
- Occasional exposure to manure, livestock environments, and laboratory chemicals (PPE provided)
- May include work in hot, cold, or dusty field/livestock conditions
