Overview
Crop Consultant Amalgamated Sugar Company – Rupert / Paul, d Sugar Company is seeking a Crop Consultant to serve as the agronomic advisor to cooperative growers in the Rupert / Mini-Cassia District. The position requires a strong understanding of agronomic practices to advise growers in all phases of sugarbeet growth to assist in producing a high quality sugarbeet crop. This position requires frequent travel in the respective growing areas to visit grower fields throughout the season.
This position reports to the District Agricultural Manager. Amalgamated Sugar Company is a grower-owned sugarbeet cooperative supporting shareholders that farm 180,000 acres of sugar beets in Southern Idaho, Eastern Oregon, and Southeastern Washington. The Agriculture Department receives 425,000 grower truckloads that deliver 7,000,000 tons of sugar beets annually across 70 receiving stations. Specialized equipment at each station, referred to as sugarbeet pilers, are used to unload and remove dirt or debris from the sugar beets before being stockpiled until processing at factory locations into granulated sugar and other products.
- Knowledgeable in agronomic practices for row crop farming, including land selection, crop rotation, soil sampling, irrigation and cropping practices.
- Knowledgeable and up to date with developments in the fields of herbicides, insecticides, nematicides, fertilization, and approved sugarbeet varieties.
- Gain an understanding of and discuss terms of annual contracts with growers and represent the company in the signing of contracts and other related documents.
- Supervise the harvesting and receiving of sugar beets grown in assigned territory.
- Supervise pile, storage, and reloading of sugar beets at assigned stations.
- Understanding of the equipment used to prepare the soil, plant, spray, cultivate, and harvest sugar beets, and can convey this basic knowledge to growers.
- Aid in collection of grower agronomic data through the Agri Data mobile application and maintain complete grower agronomic records for use to promote sugarbeet yield and quality improvement.
- Disseminate production statistics to growers and discuss ways to increase quality and yield.
- Prepare crop yield and quality estimates, and other reports as required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Agriculture Business, or related field is preferred.
- 3 or more years of experience as a Crop Consultant or Agronomist, or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Able to read and understand oral and written policies, follow safety protocols and environmental requirements, and follow company policies.
