Objects Conservator

Location:

Lapwai,  Age: 55. Program:
National Park Service – Nez Perce National Historical Park. Wage: $140.00 per hour.

Hours:

20 per week (up to 200 total hours).

Job Overview

For over 25 years, National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions) has connected experienced workers (ages 55+) with federal agencies. This position supports the NPS Nez Perce National Historical Park Office in all aspects of conservation treatment and preservation for rock art and curated museum objects.

Qualifications
  • MA/MS degree in archaeology, anthropology, or museum sciences.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in anthropology/archaeology or cultural resources conservation.
  • Knowledge of current acceptable conservation practices, techniques, and processes.
  • Experience conducting conservation on petroglyph and pictograph panels.
  • Experience documenting archaeology sites via narrative, photograph, GIS, and illustration.
  • Experience documenting damage to rock art sites.
  • Experience working in tribal consultation preferred.
  • Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
Duties
  • Assist the park archaeologist with documentation and condition assessment of petroglyphs at archaeology sites under the care of NEPE (15%).
  • Assist the park archaeologist with determining and documenting the extent of damage and best course of action for mitigating vandalism on rock art sites (15%).
  • Assist the park archaeologist with conducting consultation with tribal partners about damage to rock art sites, potential mitigation, and collaborative action plans (20%).
  • Assist the park archaeologist with documenting measures taken to mitigate vandalism damage to rock art sites (20%).
  • Assist the museum curator with assessment and documentation of damage to cultural objects in the museum curatorial facility (15%).
  • Assist the museum curator with mitigation and stabilization of damaged objects in the museum curatorial facility (15%).
  • Overnight travel:
    One trip anticipated.
  • Physical requirements:

    Reasonable accommodations may be made. Lab environment with physical exertion such as long periods of standing, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects, and requiring exceptional manual dexterity for delicate conservation treatments.
