Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Yellow Iron)
Job Summary We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Yellow Iron) to join our team supporting our North Carolina landfill operations. This role is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment.
The position will split time between:
Shotwell Landfill – Knightdale, NCTri-Corners Landfill – Liberty, NCKey Responsibilities Perform repairs and scheduled preventative maintenance on heavy equipment and vehicles
Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and air systems
Identify issues and complete or recommend appropriate repair solutions to ensure equipment reliability
Maintain accurate service and maintenance records
Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with company policies and OSHA regulations
Working Conditions &
Physical Requirements Perform physically demanding work, including lifting, pushing, and pulling objects up to 100 lbsWork in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather, equipment hazards, and landfill conditions
Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE at all times
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods
Qualifications
To successfully perform this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Experience & Education Minimum 2+ years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of heavy equipment systems and maintenance
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Certifications (Preferred)
ASE Diesel Certification or equivalent technical certification
Skills & Competencies Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability
Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
Self-motivated with strong work ethic
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications Experience operating heavy equipment (bulldozers, loaders, excavators, etc.)Familiarity with landfill or construction environments
