Description

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing journeyman-level mechanical work involving the inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, on-highway trucks, ready-mix vehicles, and various construction-related machinery. The role ensures that fleet operations remain in compliance with performance, safety, and reliability standards.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Complete tune-up, repair, and overhaul of diesel engines, including removal and replacement.
  • Complete tune-up, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, including removal and replacement.
  • Use OEM software to diagnose and repair engines and transmissions.
  • Service and adjust transmissions.
  • Overhaul, maintain, and adjust clutches, drive line components, and differentials.
  • Overhaul and maintain heavy and light-duty suspension systems, including heavy leaf springs.
  • Overhaul, maintain, and adjust power and manual steering systems and components.
  • Repair and maintain fuel systems and related components, both diesel and gas.
  • Repair and maintain emission control systems.
  • Check, test, and repair all components and accessories of electrical systems, 6, 12, and 24 volts.
  • Repair and maintain cooling and heating systems.
  • Repair and maintain air conditioning systems.
  • Repair and maintain brake systems and related components, including mechanical brakes, electric brakes, hydraulic brakes, and air brake systems.
  • Repair and maintain exhaust systems.
  • Overhaul, maintain, and test hydraulic systems, including pumps, rams, control valves, lines, and hoses.
  • Lubricate, grease, and perform oil changes on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment according to specifications.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate vehicle washing equipment and steam cleaner.
  • Make visual inspections of equipment and report any needed repairs to the Supervisor.
  • Make service calls for emergency repairs, heavy-duty towing, and equipment retrieval.
  • Submit required work orders for work performed and time spent on the job.
  • Charge parts, supplies, oils, and grease to work orders.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Perform welding on steel and aluminum using Gas, Arc, and Mig welding techniques.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Skilled at analyzing, diagnosing, and correcting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures and defects.
  • Skilled at using specialized tools and machines standard to the trade.
  • Plan and lay out repair work; read, understand, and execute repair instructions from manuals; follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Promote a safe work environment by following all company rules and regulations.
  • Comply with the company attendance policy.
  • Keep the work area clean and free of clutter.
  • Engage in strenuous physical activity, including stooping, standing, bending, climbing, etc.; lift up to 50 lbs.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in heavy-duty diesel equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Valid Class C driver's license;
    Class A or B license preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks including climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to dust, noise, and outdoor weather.
