Social Services Social Worker 2 (SSSW-2)

The SSSW-2 shall coordinate with their supervisor in handling and investigating complaints/referrals of child abuse and neglect as presented from the community, law enforcement, schools, State of Idaho Health and Welfare, or any other source within the boundaries of the Coeur d'Alene reservation. The SSSW-2 shall provide case management to their clients and must be flexible in all aspects of this job.

Communicating or posting information or content on the Internet or using any social media platforms that adversely affects your job performance, the performance of co-workers, or otherwise adversely affects members, customers, or the Tribe and its administration negatively will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Must have strong customer service skills and the ability to defuse tense situations while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Must be culturally sensitive to a diverse customer population and able to interact tactfully and positively with Tribal members, all levels of tribal staff and management. The SSSW-2 must be able to perform all duties and assigned tasks in a timely manner and must assume a sense of ownership over all tasks. Must represent the Social Services Department in a manner that reflects the highest of professional standards and promotes a positive image of the Tribe and its administration at all times.

Responsibilities include:

  • Investigating complaints/referrals of child abuse and neglect within the boundaries of the Coeur d'Alene reservation for Native American children and/or descendants;
  • Working with law enforcement, the courts, etc., and be able to remove children from their homes who are not safe or victims of child abuse and neglect and perform duties associated with this action;
  • Withstanding scrutiny and criticism of community when dealing with the removal of children within the tribal community;
  • Having relevant experience in social services or related field;
  • Being knowledgeable in socio-economic factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect;
  • Being computer literate and able to navigate through various computer programs;
  • Completing tasks and meeting deadlines within expected program guidelines;
  • Being flexible and willing to complete various tasks within the social services programs that may not completely fall into the category of child abuse and neglect. These may include allegations of elder abuse, domestic violence, and other duties as assigned or required;
  • Effectively communicating both orally and in written format;
  • Possessing some knowledge of federal/state/tribal laws regarding Native American children and families, such as the Indian Child Welfare Act, or other various acts and/or being willing and capable of learning such knowledge and applying it to the job;
  • Being willing to travel and train and continually upgrade knowledge and skills for performing job duties;
  • Being willing to attend NICWA Training for social workers;
  • Being able to work with the court systems at the tribal/state/federal levels;
  • Being able to work with youth shelter staff and fill in at the shelter during business hours if necessary;
  • Being able to work with families in crisis and assist with problem solving and coordinate with other service providers;
  • Being able to handle large volumes of work and meet program deadlines;
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality;
  • Being able to work with various types of supervision;
  • Being able to follow the chain of command and comply with tribal codes and personnel policies;
  • Being reliable, dependable, and punctual in attendance;
  • Being willing to develop protocols within the program and assist with implementation of a constantly changing program.
  • Being willing to do other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • AA degree, Social Services or Related Field.
  • Must support the Coeur d'Alene Tribe's: vision, mission, and core values per CdA Resolution 015 (2020).
  • Must be a member of a federally recognized tribe.
  • Must have an initial pre-employment physical exam and TB screening/test and annually thereafter, and must comply with other Tribal Health policies.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable at the time of application and during the course of employment.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and have no criminal (misdemeanor or felony) offenses against: children, Domestic Violence, or crimes involving dishonesty/deception/theft/fraud, abuse, neglect, or endangerment of a child or elder.
  • No misdemeanor or felony offenses related to controlled substance of alcohol or drugs within the past ten years.
  • If in recovery, must be able to document sobriety/recovery of at least five (5) years.
  • Must be able to meet expectations and performance as listed in job duties and responsibilities.
  • Must be willing to document written skills level.
