Summary
This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Civilian References Services Branch. The incumbent provides reference services associated with military and civilian medical records, academic records, and military special and general orders located at this facility.
DutiesAs an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will:
- Analyze requests submitted by individuals or organizations seeking information that is contained in organizational and non-organizational records maintained at the Annex.
- Develop alternate leads to locate requested information when requests submitted are insufficient. Utilizes appropriate automated retrieval systems to determine possible records locations.
- Conduct examination of records for pertinent information while interpreting and clarifying items peculiar to a particular branch and period of service.
- Exercise knowledge of all medical organizational records, the high-level organizational structure of the military treatment facilities, as well as other records depositories, and the contents of extensive files.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full‑time work; part‑time work is considered on a prorated basis. - A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
- If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
- Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i‑9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
- This position requires candidate's to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The work requires climbing caster‑equipped ladders handling thereon boxes of records weighing up to 50 pounds that are stored up to 15 or 16 feet above the floor; work also involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching and lifting.
- The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or warehouse, e.g., use of safe working practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Incumbent will be handling some aged records that are dusty and fragile.

Specialized
Experience:
To be qualified for this position at the GS‑5 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑4 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Utilizing database information for research purposes and maintaining information within that database; AND
- Using established guidelines to review files or documents for completeness; AND
- Providing customer service to various audiences through oral or written communication techniques.
