Focus:
The Hazmat Regulatory Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring the compliant, safe, and efficient shipment of hazardous materials across global markets. This position serves as the subject-matter expert for all dangerous goods and international logistics compliance, ensuring adherence to International Air Transport Association (IATA), Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) regulations, Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) security requirements, and global export classification standards.
Hazmat Regulatory Supervisor
Essential Functions:
- Oversee the negotiation, administration, and performance management of carrier contracts to ensure service reliability, cost efficiency, and compliance with company standards.
- Provide strategic oversight of all explosive testing activities by managing relationships with authorized test laboratories, ensuring completion of required evaluations, and directing the accurate and timely submission of test results to Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) for explosive classification and approvals.
- Lead organizational preparedness for Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Customs & Border Protection (CBP) audits by maintaining continuous audit-ready compliance, coordinating cross-functional teams and activities, and ensuring rapid, accurate response to regulatory inquiries.
- Manage and analyze total freight spending, developing cost-control strategies, monitoring budget performance, and identifying opportunities for savings and process optimization.
- Oversee export compliance by leading internal audits of Automated Export System (AES) filings, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with regulatory requirements under the Foreign Trade Regulations.
- Validate hazmat classifications, packing instructions, UN numbers, and regulatory references, ensuring full compliance.
- Prepare, review, and approve DG documentation, including IATA Shipper's Declaration, International Maritime Organization (IMO)/International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) declarations, commercial invoices, export documentation, and carrier-specific forms.
- Coordinate international shipments with freight forwarders, carriers, customs brokers, and regulatory agencies to ensure accurate and timely movement.
- Monitor regulatory updates (IATA, IMDG, 49 CFR, ATF, export controls) and integrate changes into internal SOPs, training materials, and workflows.
- Provide coaching and training on hazmat and security requirements.
- Maintain all necessary certifications (IATA DGR, IMDG, 49 CFR training) and ensure team readiness.
Hazmat Regulatory Supervisor Position Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree
* Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or related disciplines preferred. - Minimum five years of hazmat logistics experience; related work within a fast-paced manufacturing/industrial environment preferred.
- Minimum of one year of direct supervisory or equivalent leadership experience, preferably within a manufacturing or industrial environment where hazardous materials compliance and logistics oversight are integral to daily operations.
- Experience with ATF controlled materials, CTPAT compliance, International Commercial Terms (Incoterms), and HTS/Schedule B export classification preferred.
- Strong knowledge of global freight forwarding, routing optimization, and DG classification.
- Expertise in packaging selection, SDS interpretation, and global shipping documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; SAP and WMS experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to drive strategic initiatives while managing daily operations in a high-volume environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must have the ability and willingness to travel up to 20%.
