The Health, Safety & Environmental Manager is a key member of the Shelbyville leadership team. Under general guidance of the Plant Manager and the Corporate Business Manager – Environmental, Health and Safety, the individual is responsible for promoting, maintaining and implementing systems of accountability for excellence in health, safety, and environmental management for a 113+ acre location with five manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution facilities, totaling 1,219,644 square feet, and a large employee base.
The Manager will ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local regulations and Graphic Packaging International (GPI) guidelines, oversee the prevention and correction of unsafe working and environmental conditions, and drive initiatives to increase safety awareness, effectiveness, and efficiency.
- Maintain written safety and health programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety & health standards and support GPI’s guidelines.
- Maintain environmental programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including the site’s Title V permitting.
- Maintain workers’ compensation program in support of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act.
- Ensure required safety and environmental training has been identified and completed for new and existing employees; oversee execution of employee training on regulatory standards and internal HSE policy.
- Provide technical support for ongoing HSE projects, problem-solving, investigations, site inspections, audits, and safety activities.
- Inspect property, equipment, and work practices for compliance with regulatory and insurance carrier standards.
- Maintain effective HSE communication processes to make priorities and performance visible.
- Maintain injury records and communicate safety-related information as required.
- Facilitate and participate in job safety analysis, process hazard analysis, and emphasize engineering solutions and doing it right the first time.
- Provide oversight and leadership to plant employee safety (JETS) teams charged with driving engagement and improvements.
- Oversee incident investigation processes to identify root causes and enforce company policy related to drug testing and disciplinary action; manage post‑accident return-to-work accommodations.
- Organize and maintain HSE performance, compliance, policy, and procedural information, including electronic backup of critical data.
- Develop and implement industry best‑practice systems for an effective HSE program while maintaining regulatory compliance and reporting HSE statistics and trend analysis.
- Research and stay informed on state and federal laws and regulations such as OSHA, USEPA, and ILEPA.
- Monitor completion of action items from EHS and security audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
- Provide on‑the‑floor EHS coaching and recognition, and assist with implementation and support of EHS responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in HSE in an industrial manufacturing environment, preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental, Occupational Safety, or a similar discipline.
- Master’s Degree, preferred.
- Advanced safety or environmental certification, preferred.
- Passion for EHS demonstrated by strong experience and commitment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to collaborate and influence all levels of employees and various departments.
- Project management skills and demonstrated ability to develop and implement HSE programs and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training.
- Software proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Time‑management and multi‑tasking skills.
- Creative problem‑solving ability, initiative, and self‑direction.
- High integrity, strong work ethic, good judgment, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
