Construction Superintendent – Community Solar Projects

This role oversees day-to-day construction activities for community solar projects across Illinois, typically ranging from 1 to 2.5 MW in size. The construction superintendent manages on-site operations from the project trailer, coordinates subcontractors, enforces safety and regulatory standards, and ensures project schedules and productivity targets are met. This is a project-based contract position with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the renewable energy industry and potential for future full-time employment.

Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day construction operations on site for community solar projects, typically 1 to 2.5 MW in size.
  • Oversee all on-site administrative duties from the project trailer, including documentation and reporting.
  • Report directly to the Senior Construction Manager and provide daily progress and safety reports.
  • Supervise and manage electrical and civil subcontractors and their forepersons on site.
  • Enforce safety and regulatory policies and procedures in compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Set and communicate daily and weekly productivity standards for contractors and subcontractors.
  • Develop and maintain a three-week look-ahead schedule and collaborate with the Senior Construction Manager to ensure milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate deliveries of equipment and materials with the logistics team and subcontractors.
  • Review and interpret construction blueprints, project plans, and specifications on a daily basis and ensure work is executed accordingly.
  • Use construction management tools and Microsoft Office applications, including PDF readers, Word, and Excel, to track progress, maintain records, and communicate with project stakeholders.
  • Support a safe, efficient, and organized job site that facilitates successful project completion.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to resolve field issues and keep the project on schedule.
Essential Skills
  • Proven construction management experience in commercial projects, preferably in electrical or civil construction.
  • Technical degree in Engineering or Construction Management, or extensive construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and schematics accurately.
  • Demonstrated experience managing subcontractors and sub vendors on active construction sites.
  • Proficiency with PDF software and Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel; must be highly computer savvy.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • OSHA 30 certification, or willingness to complete an OSHA 30 course arranged by the employer if needed.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Solar construction experience, particularly on commercial or community-scale projects.
  • Electrician or electrical construction experience.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in the renewable energy industry.
  • Ability to work independently on site while maintaining strong communication with remote project leadership.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing schedules, documentation, and multiple subcontractors.
Work Environment

The role is based on active solar construction sites across central and northwest Illinois, supported by an on-site company trailer that serves as the superintendent's daily base of operations. Each site typically hosts multiple electrical and civil subcontractors working concurrently. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 40 hours per week. Overtime must receive prior approval from a supervisor and is not expected to be a regular feature of the role.

The dress code is typical construction attire—such as jeans and a T-shirt—paired with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The position offers hands-on exposure to commercial-scale solar construction, with project-based contracts and the potential to move onto subsequent projects and, depending on performance and business needs, opportunities for full-time employment in a growing renewable energy environment.
