Monday thru Friday. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required for scheduled and breaking news events. The reporter will live in Utah and will travel across the region.
Salary: $51,000 - $57,000.
Job SummaryKUER, NPR Utah seeks a journalist to connect with audiences across Utah, writing and producing news content for various platforms and developing digital audience engagement.
Responsibilities- Prioritize audience needs, share story ideas, and actively participate in story origin cycle.
- Manage KUER News’ relationships online and in person, solicit, research, and pitch original coverage topics, build trust, and record, write, edit, and voice reports across written, video, and audio platforms.
- Lead author and voice of KUER’s daily and weekly newsletters; curate content and increase subscriptions with Digital Content Manager.
- Adhere to deadlines, work with editorial team on breaking news decisions, and collaborate with staff on journalism supporting KUER’s mission.
- Participate in fund drives and represent KUER at community and station events.
- Execute administrative duties related to reporting and community engagement to support federal and grant reporting requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Broadcasting, or related field, or equivalent (with required work experience).
- One year of previous professional news field experience.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, understanding of public media, multimedia journalism, and radio broadcasting.
- Production skills for editing and recording final story formats.
- 3-5 years of professional journalism experience and willingness to grow.
- Sound news judgment and knowledge of best practices.
- Creative storytelling centered on audience needs and diverse Utah perspectives.
- Ability to identify stories from audience questions and community conversations.
- Explain complex ideas conversationally and engagingly.
- Portfolio demonstrating interviewing, writing, fact‑checking, and multi‑platform production skills.
- Experience in photography, video, and audio production.
- Commitment to writing for and appearing on video, social media, radio, and TV.
- Strong organizational skills and high‑quality journalism delivery.
- Excellent communicator, team player, problem solver with human relations skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Understanding of public media and AP Style.
- Familiarity with Utah culture and politics.
- Fluency in a second language.
