Job Description

Summary:

The Office of the Arts at William & Mary invites applications for the part-time, hourly position of Audio Technician. This position supports a wide range of university arts programs, community events, external rentals, and a diverse presented season featuring renowned artists across multiple artistic disciplines.

Reporting to the Associate Technical Director, the Audio Technician collaborates with production and technical staff to provide audio support for performances, rehearsals, lectures, and special events. Responsibilities include assessing event-specific audio requirements; installing, operating, and troubleshooting sound systems; maintaining audio equipment; supporting venue operations; supervising student production crews; and ensuring all audio systems are prepared for daily academic, university, and external rental use.

This part-time position is not eligible for benefits.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or equivalent education, experience, and/or training

Comprehensive knowledge of operating, maintaining, and repairing sound equipment

Knowledge of theatrical/music sound systems and their operation

Knowledge of Yamaha consoles, specifically the CL/QL family

Knowledge of Dante (Digital Audio Network Through Ethernet)
Proficiency in QLabProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Experience with streaming and recording

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior technical experience in a performing arts environment

Experience with NDI (Network Device Interface), SDI (Serial digital interface), and Dante (Digital Audio Network Through Ethernet)
Creative skill sets with the ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously

Demonstrated ability to collaborate in an environment with changing priorities

Demonstrated attention to detail with an ability to prioritize and execute tasks accurately in a fast-paced work environment

Experience supervising student workers

Collaboration and communication with sound designers/engineers

Compensation: $26.00/hour

This is a part-time, hourly position with a work schedule of up to 20 hours per week.

Evening and weekend work is required.

All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.

This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Job Duties:

40% - Technical

Collaboration:

Provide technical support for shows in the presented season.

Collaborate with production and technical managers to assess the audio needs for multiple shows throughout the year.

Supervise student sound crews in load-in/performance and strike of shows.

Serve as programmer or board op mixer as when needed.
40% - Shows and Events Support:

Provide technical support for shows and events hosted by campus groups and departments.

Support audio needs for shows and events within PBK and MAC, ensuring that groups have the necessary sound equipment to ensure a successful event or production.

Serve as building support staff as needed.

Perform other tasks as needed.
20% - Equipment Tracking and Maintenance:

Keep equipment organized in all performance spaces and storage.

Ensure that equipment is functional, operating, and organized.

Maintain equipment through theater and music turnover.
