The Assistant Architect is responsible for supporting architectural planning, design development, documentation, and execution of development projects within the Development Division. The scope involves assisting in the preparation of design development drawings and proposals, design presentation, detailed construction drawings, ensuring that all architectural outputs comply with the approved standards, project briefs, University and local authority requirements, and relevant codes of practice.
The Assistant Architect is also required to assist in the preparation of quotation/tender documentation, including drawings, specifications as well as coordinating with other technical disciplines such as civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure design integration and buildability.
The scope also includes reviewing contractor’s submissions such as shop drawings, material samples, method statements, and mock-ups, ensuring compliance with design intent and project specifications. The Assistant Architect will also be required assisting in site inspections, monitoring architectural works for quality and conformity, attending site meetings, coordinating design issues, preparation of defects lists, verification of as-built drawings, ensuring that the architectural works delivered are functional, safe, and aligned with the University’s requirement.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in coordinating with end-users, consultants, and contractors to identify the architectural design requirements.
- Prepare concept designs, architectural drawings, and presentation materials.
- Develop detailed drawings and documentation, including assisting in submission drawings for local authority approval.
- Conduct site inspections to monitor architectural works for quality, progress, and compliance with approved designs, drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate with Civil & Structural and M&E engineers to ensure proper design integration and buildability.
- Support upgrading/renovation works to ensure compliance with architectural standards and design intent.
- Review contractor submissions such as shop drawings, material samples, mock-ups, and method statements for compliance with design intent and specifications.
- Attend coordination meetings to support resolution of design and construction issues.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, technical documentation and defects lists.
- Verify as-built drawings submitted by contractors.
- Maintain proper documentation and records of all project activities and site progress.
- Possess a Diploma in Architecture or equivalent qualification from any institution recognised by the Malaysian Government.
- Possess at least five (5) years’ working experience in architectural field.
- Resourceful, with sound knowledge in architectural design, construction technology, and project coordination.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other relevant design or drafting software (e.g. Sketch Up, Revit is an added advantage).
- Good command of spoken and written English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Possess a high level of integrity and professionalism.
- Able to work in a team, committed, and dedicated to assigned tasks.
- Able to work independently in a fast-paced working environment.
- Energetic with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Possess a valid Class D driving licence and willing to travel for site visits when required.
- Credits in Bahasa Malaysia and English language (including oral examination) at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level OR equivalent qualification recognised by the Government (for Malaysian citizens).
- IELTS Band 6 / MUET Band 4.
Candidate without any of these qualifications will be required to sit for the IIUM English Language Proficiency Test.
