Position Summary:

The Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, standards-aligned instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to middle school students in grades [specific grade level(s)]. This educator will inspire a love of literacy and foster critical thinking and effective communication skills in students. The teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues in daily Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings, sharing strategies, analyzing student data, and aligning instruction to improve student outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for ELA, a commitment to each student's success, and a strong understanding of Illinois Learning Standards for ELA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Planning and Delivery:
    • Develop and deliver engaging lessons aligned with Illinois Learning Standards for ELA and the school's curriculum.
    • Use diverse instructional strategies to engage students in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the varied learning needs of all students, including students with special needs, English Language Learners, and advanced learners.
  • Professional Learning Community (PLC) Participation:
    • Participate in daily PLC meetings with grade-level and content-area colleagues to collaboratively review student data, analyze instructional strategies, and align teaching practices.
    • Contribute ideas, insights, and resources to support continuous improvement and shared accountability for student growth.
    • Work with colleagues to develop, implement, and assess common formative assessments and adapt instruction based on PLC discussions.
  • Classroom Management and Environment:
    • Establish a positive, inclusive classroom environment that fosters respect, collaboration, and a love for language and literature.
    • Implement effective classroom management strategies to maintain a productive and supportive learning atmosphere.
    • Create a safe and encouraging environment where students are empowered to express themselves and take academic risks.
  • Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress in reading comprehension, writing, and other literacy skills.
    • Maintain accurate records of student achievement and provide timely, constructive feedback to students and families.
    • Collaborate with support staff and administration to provide targeted interventions or enrichment as needed.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Communicate regularly with families to share updates on student progress, classroom activities, and strategies to support literacy at home.
    • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities to build connections and further school goals.
    • Work closely with instructional support staff and administration to ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed.
  • Professional Development and School Community Involvement:
    • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current on best practices in literacy instruction, curriculum updates, and Illinois state standards.
    • Actively contribute to the school community by supporting extracurricular activities, school events, and promoting a positive school culture.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Middle Grades English Language Arts Endorsement.
  • Strong knowledge of Illinois Learning Standards for ELA and effective literacy instruction practices.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills, particularly in a PLC setting.

Preferred

Skills:

  • Experience with instructional technology and digital literacy tools (e.g., interactive whiteboards, online reading and writing platforms).
  • Proficiency in differentiated instruction and data-driven teaching strategies.
  • Ability to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a passion for reading and writing in students.

Working Conditions:

  • School-based position with primary responsibilities in the classroom.
  • Daily PLC meetings with colleagues and support staff.
  • Standard school schedule with some variation based on district calendar; occasional evening meetings or events may be required.
