Reports to:

Building Principal

Contract Year: 9 months, unless stated otherwise.

Salary Range:
Determined by Certified Salary Schedule.

Basic Function of This Position Is
  • To impart to each student as much knowledge and skill as possible
  • To help develop responsible, healthy attitudes of self and community.
Major Responsibilities
  • 1. Planning
    • Develop overall goals for the year consistent with curriculum.
    • Plan sequential activities and projects which will implement the planned program.
    • Schedule individual, group, and whole class activities.
    • Obtain necessary supplies and equipment for all activities.
    • Plan and prepare for all levels of student abilities.
  • 2. Direct Teaching
    • Present initial teaching.
    • Re-teach those pupils who need further instruction and practice.
    • Coordinate individualized teaching.
    • Reinforce and enrich through varied techniques and materials.
  • 3. Indirect Teaching
    • Set a positive example for students to follow.
    • Be available for guidance.
    • Observe and respond to student needs.
    • Provide an attractive learning environment.
    • Help the student learn self-control and gain a positive self-image.
  • 4. Discipline and Supervision
    • Create a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
    • Share in supervision of total school setting.
    • Clearly explain and fairly enforce classroom and school rules.
    • Accept primary responsibility for classroom discipline and supervision.
    • Promote understanding of and respect for self, classmates, and those in authority.
    • Encourage respect for personnel and school property.
    • Supervise detention period (if applicable).
  • 5. Curriculum Development
    • Evaluate curriculum.
    • Take part in curriculum development and revision.
    • Update materials and teaching methods as needed.
    • Serve on textbook selection committees.
  • 6. Evaluation
    • Develop evaluation procedures for course content which will allow for flexible, fair and diagnostic progress report of student progress.
    • Evaluate pupil performance continuously to determine nature and extent of direction needed to attain goals.
    • Continuously self-evaluate teaching methods.
  • 7. Reporting to Parents
    • Prepare mid-term progress reports.
    • Prepare report cards.
    • Confer with parents.
  • 8. Record Keeping
    • Maintain all required attendance and grade records.
    • Maintain cumulative folders and cards.
    • Record money collections (room mothers, lyceums, pictures, lunches, etc.).
    • Maintain classroom inventory of material and equipment.
  • 9. Classroom Management
    • Organize materials and supplies.
    • Requisition supplies.
    • Report needed repairs to responsible party.
    • Use and care for all materials and equipment responsibly and carefully.
    • Be responsible for classroom security.
  • 10. Professional Development
    • Read professional magazines and journals to keep informed.
    • Take continuing education courses, as possible.
    • Communicate with other teachers, locally and in other school districts.
    • Participate in in-service workshops and clinics.
    • Participate in professional conventions in own teaching field, as possible.
  • 11. Staff Member
    • Be supportive of school functions.
    • Strive to be a model staff member, amicably sharing all responsibilities.
    • Interact and cooperate with other teachers for the improvement of grade level and/or subject area programs.
    • Maintain professional cooperation with building principal and other administrators.
    • Be aware of and responsive to community programs and resources.
  • 12. All Other Duties as Assigned
    • Serve as liaison between individual children and support staff.
    • Make referrals for special services.
    • Arrange for field trips, resource personnel, etc.
    • Follow prescribed first aid and insurance procedure.
    • All other duties as assigned.
