JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY OF POSITION

The safety assistant provides security services for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds; monitoring the main lobby/entrance and other areas of school grounds; assuring student compliance with school and District rules and procedures; and communicating information in response to inquiries. This class also provides a positive role model for students and promotes positive relationships with students.

MINIMUM

KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate
  • Two (2) years of full‑time employment or equivalent experience that aligns to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below OR
  • Meet one of the following four options:
  • completed 50 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Obtained an associates degree (or higher) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • met a formal state assessment by ONE of the following means:
    • passed the ETS Para Pro assessment (460 or higher)
    • Passed the applicable ACT Work Keys assessment (applied math-4; reading for information-4, writing/business writing-3; and an “Acceptable” on the Instructional Support Inventory
  • Met state paraprofessional approval PLUS 300 Professional Training Points (PTPS)
  • B. CREDENTIALS
  • Candidates may be required to possess a current Illinois Motor Vehicle Class D Operator licence.
  • Candidate may be required to have CPR and First Aid certification
  • C. KNOWLEDGE,

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of restorative practices, Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and positive behavior support strategies.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, District policies, procedures, and student confidentiality requirements.
  • Knowledge of school safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and crisis prevention practices.
  • Knowledge of the cognitive, social, emotional, communicative, and physical needs of students and factors that influence student development and behavior.
  • Knowledge of and respect for diverse cultural, linguistic, environmental, and socioeconomic backgrounds and their impact on student learning and engagement.
  • Effective interpersonal, relationship‑building, and conflict resolution skills with students, staff, families, and community members.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information and respond appropriately to questions, concerns, and complaints.
  • Ability to apply restorative practices, MTSS principles, and behavior intervention strategies to support positive student outcomes.
  • Ability to establish rapport with students and reinforce positive social, emotional, and behavioral development.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, ethical practices, and confidentiality when handling sensitive student and staff information.
  • Ability to assess situations, exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and respond effectively during emergencies or crises.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions while demonstrating initiative and independent decision‑making when appropriate.
  • Ability to analyze information, maintain accurate documentation, and prepare reports and correspondence related to assigned duties.
  • Ability to administer first aid and utilize approved safety, de‑escalation, and protective techniques when necessary to maintain safety.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds while contributing to a safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environment.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assesses situations for potential danger, responds appropriately, and calls for assistance when necessary.
  • Supports Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavioral interventions within the MTSS framework and assists with Level 1 student behavior incidents.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment through collaboration with staff and administration.
  • Supervises students in hallways, common areas, arrival/dismissal, and school activities to ensure compliance with school expectations and behavioral standards.
