Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring efficient, customer-focused daily library operations. This position provides leadership on system-wide projects and oversees operations in the absence of the Library Director. The Assistant Director addresses patron concerns and emergencies professionally to maintain a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for both staff and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Administrative Support and Leadership
  • Communicates regularly with the Library Director regarding daily operational goals.
  • Interprets and applies Library Board–approved policies in managing library operations.
  • Assists with drafting policies and establishing library goals and objectives.
  • Assists with preparation for Library Board meetings.
  • Attends meetings and participates in continuing education related to library management.
  • Oversees daily operations in the absence of the Library Director.
  • Assists with interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and scheduling library employees.
  • Fills in at public service desks as needed due to staff absences.
  • Processes payroll in coordination with the Library Director.
  • Promotes teamwork and maintains positive staff relationships.
Public Service and Patron Relations
  • Provides friendly, courteous, and accurate service to all library users.
  • Serves as intermediary for patron concerns, interpreting library policies and resolving conflicts.
  • Instructs and assists patrons in the use of electronic resources, including the online catalog.
  • Maintains neat and organized public spaces, including desks, counters, shelves, tables, and visible work areas.
Collection Development and Management
  • Develops, maintains, and promotes the circulating collection to meet community needs and interests with the Library Director.
  • Weeds materials as necessary to ensure a current and well-maintained collection.
  • Evaluates community use of library services to inform collection and service improvements.
Financial and Reporting Responsibilities
  • Monitors library expenditures and expedites bill payment.
  • Prepares reports and maintains statistics for annual library reporting.
Community Engagement
  • Builds community outreach initiatives.
  • Oversees library programming in partnership with the Bookmobile under the supervision of the Library Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of library practices, procedures, and technologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and similar software applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion with patrons and staff.
  • Ability to conduct effective patron interviews.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Accurate keyboarding and internet navigation skills.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift, and carry items up to twenty (20) pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with prior library experience demonstrating progressive responsibility.
  • Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience.
  • Availability to work day, evening, and weekend hours.
  • Reliable access to transportation.
Compensation
  • $60,000 to $70,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Benefits: IMRF participation, health insurance, paid leave, holidays, and other benefits per library policy.
