English Teacher – US Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL
The Future Sailor Preparatory Course (FSPC) is a specialized program designed to provide recruits with essential academic skills targeting English concepts that directly relate to the ASVAB, the military’s standardized test. This assesses qualifications for enlistment, eligibility for specific jobs, and guides placement in various military training programs.
This role offers educators the chance to transition from a traditional classroom setting into one that is mission‑driven, supports recruits, and prepares patriots. Teaching English in a military environment requires strong instructional skills, the ability to adapt, motivate, and engage individuals without taking anything home, thus gaining back your work life balance.
The English instructor position focuses on delivering Navy approved curriculum in a 1:30 classroom ratio.
Responsibilities- Teach the FSPC curriculum: including a predetermined set of vocabulary words, Greek and Latin root words, reading comprehension, and test‑taking skills.
- Maintain an orderly and professional atmosphere.
- Navigate Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Teams.
- Stand for two to three‑hour instructional blocks.
- Manage thirty‑minute study hall/tutor time.
- Bachelor’s degree in English Language Arts or related fields.
- Classroom experience teaching middle school or higher.
- Ability to deliver content effectively, efficiently, and with fidelity.
- Interpersonal skills, resilience, and organization.
- Ability to complete Navy‑specific training modules on the job.
- Able to obtain and maintain Secret Clearance.
- Read, write, and speak fluent English.
- Accept and use feedback professionally.
- Frequent use of hands and arms; prolonged sitting may be required.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, and focus adjustment.
- Ability to interpret instructions involving multiple abstract and concrete variables.
