This is a part time, non-exempt instructor position in the Adult Education Department for classes in fall semester starting immediately in Pittsfield, IL. This position is a non-tenure track serving in a temporary or auxiliary capacity to teach specific courses on a course-by-course basis.
Job DescriptionJohn Wood Community College is seeking a dedicated, student-focused Adult Education Instructor to provide high-quality instruction in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (GED®) preparation at the JWCC Southeast Education Center in Pittsfield. The instructor will work with adult learners who are seeking to improve foundational academic skills, earn a high school equivalency credential, prepare for postsecondary education or workforce training, and achieve personal and career goals.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, prepare, and deliver standards-based instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies aligned with Illinois Adult Education content standards.
- Assess student skill levels using approved placement and diagnostic assessments and develop individualized learning plans.
- Prepare students to successfully complete the GED® exam through differentiated instruction and evidence-based teaching practices.
- Integrate digital literacy, workforce readiness, and college and career preparation into classroom instruction.
- Monitor student attendance, academic progress, measurable skill gains, and educational outcomes using required data management systems.
- Maintain accurate and timely student records in accordance with program requirements.
- Foster a positive, supportive classroom environment that encourages student engagement, persistence, and achievement.
- Collaborate with Adult Education staff, career services, workforce partners, and community organizations to support student success.
- Participate in professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the Adult Education and Literacy Program.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education or a related field.
- Experience teaching adult learners, secondary education, or developmental education preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to teach foundational reading, writing, and mathematics skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Experience with distance learning, blended instruction, and online learning platforms.
- Experience using standardized assessments and student data to improve instructional outcomes.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Classes meet Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00am - 12:00pm August through May.
- Instruction is provided at the Southeast Education Center in Pittsfield.
- This position may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online instruction.
- This position has an estimated base salary range of $25.00 - $26.00 per hour.
