Director Of Adult Education & Alternative Education
The Director of Adult Education & Alternative Education supports the Dean of Transfer & Adult Education in coordinating and administering adult education and literacy programs. This position oversees the daily operations of the Alternative High School Learning Center and assists in managing all high school programs offered by the College.
Essential Duties Or ResponsibilitiesThe essential duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Other related duties which may be required by the Dean of Transfer & Adult Ed (duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but are generally within the occupational series and responsibility level associated with the employee's class of work).
Program Leadership and Administration
- Responsible for coordinating all of Adult Education grant activities.
- Develops the Area Planning Council and serves as Chair.
- Creates and implements policies and procedures for the high school programs.
- Writes the adult education grant, develops program budgets, and maintains administrative files.
Program Coordination and Operations
- Promotes curriculum development, registration, and supervision of the summer school and after-school programs, textbooks, and materials.
- Coordinates the Bridge/Transition programs for adult education students.
- Coordinate student intake and registration for high school programs.
- Assist in the development of curriculum for high school programs.
- Work with the testing center and testing agencies to ensure a positive testing experience for High School Equivalency exams.
Student Support and Engagement
- Maintain contact with parents of students.
- Supervise and monitor student activities while on campus.
- Supervise and monitor the behavior and progress of students and make recommendations regarding retention in the program.
- Providing social work services improves student attendance, interventions to assist students, referral assistance, and retention strategies.
Data Management, Reporting, and Compliance
- Coordinate the collection and reporting of student grades.
- Maintain and coordinate the reporting of student attendance.
- Serve as designated ADA Coordinator for adult education programs.
Outreach, Recruitment, and Professional Responsibilities
- Visit local high schools and programs on a regular basis.
- Identify, recruit, and assess potential adult education and literacy students.
- Coordinate with public relations on outreach activities, flier distribution, and community meetings for potential adult education classes.
Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
- Experience in alternative education programs.
Preferred:
- Experience teaching in multi-level classes and developing curriculum.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong knowledge of adult education principles, alternative instruction methods, and relevant regulatory compliance, including ADA requirements.
- Proven ability to write and manage grants, develop program budgets, and maintain detailed administrative records.
- Excellent leadership and supervisory skills to oversee program staff and monitor student progress and behavior.
- Skill in coordinating program activities, including student intake, registration, curriculum development, and testing processes.
- Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, and outreach initiatives that enhance program effectiveness and student retention.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and ability to represent the institution in external professional settings.
