The City of Sandwich is seeking a qualified and dependable Water Plant Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities, along with the flexibility to adapt to changing daily workflows in a dynamic environment.
This position is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of the municipal water system. Duties are varied and may change from day to day, requiring a proactive and detail‑oriented approach. The Water Plant Operator reports directly to the Water Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities- Perform daily water plant operations and maintenance
- Collect water samples and conduct laboratory testing
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and operational data
- Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including fire hydrants, handheld meter‑reading devices, buffalo box keys, and other tools
- Read water meters and complete route inspections using physical registers
- Perform utility locating services (J.U.L.I.E.)
- Inspect, repair, and replace water meters in residential settings
- Conduct filter backwashing and other treatment processes
- Assist with water system repairs and infrastructure maintenance
- Respond to emergency situations and communicate service interruptions to the public
- Provide support to other departments as directed
- Notify residents of water‑related updates and service information
- Accurately document all work performed
- All other duties as assigned
This role requires a hands‑on individual who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, with a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and service for the community.
SupervisionWorks under the general supervision of the Water Superintendent.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED with two years of post‑secondary training in a related field (biology, environmental science, etc.), or equivalent experience.
