About the Project
The Springfield Rail Relocation project is a major infrastructure effort in Central Illinois, involving the construction of six new underpasses, four existing underpasses, and at‑grade rail crossings, with completion expected in 2027. The project is managed by Hanson Professional Services Inc., a consulting firm that provides engineering, scientific, and allied services.
Role OverviewAs a Construction Observer, you will work as part of a collaborative team, conducting construction observation and contract administration for roadway, bridge, retaining wall, railway, storm and sanitary sewer, and storm detention projects. The assignment is for up to two years with the opportunity for additional assignments on future Hanson projects.
Responsibilities- Represent the owner in monitoring construction activities, often across multiple work aspects simultaneously.
- Document contract quantities of construction materials in accordance with IDOT procedures.
- Coordinate survey work and materials testing.
- Assist with progress meetings.
- Resolve contract problems and complete required documentation on time, making adjustments within established policies.
- Interpret plans and specifications.
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in civil engineering technology or two years of college in pre‑engineering or civil technology is preferred; a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year civil engineering program is preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of construction observation and contract administration experience, preferably with Illinois Department of Transportation roadway and railway projects.
- Current IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities certification and Construction Materials Management System training, or ability to obtain within three (3) months.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Independence and teamwork in problem‑solving and learning new technical skills.
- Ability to multi‑task and oversee concurrent activities.
- Self‑motivation.
Technician III: $31 – $33 per hour
Technician IV (minimum 6 years of experience): $33.40 – $37.10 per hour
Technician V (minimum 8 years of experience): $35 – $42 per hour
