The Fourth Engineer may be employed on watch keeping or day work duties at the discretion of the Chief Engineer. The Fourth Engineer shall be accountable to and report through the Second Engineer and shall undertake duties as allocated or directed by the Second Engineer and carry out duties depending on ship manning and operational requirements.

• Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the machinery and equipment for which they have been allocated responsibility by the 2nd or Chief Engineer.
• Undertake engine room watchkeeping duties as EOOW.
• Diligently carry out, in a safe and efficient manner, any task to which a Senior Engineering Officer has directed them.
• Be familiar with the shipboard machinery and systems so that, in an emergency, essential services can be safely and speedily restored.
• Fully understand, and abide by, Company policies, work permits, procedures and instructions, and the Code of Safe Working Practices.
• Assist with overhaul, maintenance and survey work as directed by a Senior Officer.
• Ensure that any information entered in the engine room log, maintenance records, oil record book, water condition logs and other records is accurate.
• Notify the Second Engineer of spare gear and consumable requirements as applicable, and keep the Second Engineer fully informed of the progress of any work, any defects or problems arising in the allocated area of responsibility.
• Comply with Company, statutory and recognised industry engineering watch keeping standards as outlined in the SSEMS, STCW, Flag State requirements and in keeping with recognised industry practice.
• Uphold the Company Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and ensure that defects, incidents, near misses or unplanned events are reported and investigated in accordance with applicable company procedure.
• Be prepared to adopt other duties within the remit of multi‑skilling objectives as agreed and advised prior to appointment.
