Midwest Operating Engineers Fringe Benefit Funds (MOE) is a $5.5 billion pension plan that pays out to over 11,000 pensioners and beneficiaries. We are seeking an experienced Retirement Services Group Assistant Manager to join our team in a Taft‑Hartley, collectively bargaining environment.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and mentor a team of 14 Pension Representatives, support staff, and interns.
- Review complex benefit calculations, including QDROs, lump‑sum payouts, RBDs, and interest calculations.
- Collaborate with auditors to ensure compliance with ERISA, IRS/DOL codes, and other applicable regulations.
- Assist with mid‑year and final reviews of staff, and provide mid‑level to final review for new pensions and adjustments.
- Support month‑end and year‑end balancing and review amendments, SPDs, and plan language as needed.
- Work with the Funds’ auditors in the preparation of annual audits and filings.
- Present to membership at Know Your Union meetings, pre‑retirement seminars, and benefit fairs.
- Assist in monthly appeal processes to ensure compliance with plan provisions.
- Manage the work and training of pension representatives, support staff, and interns.
- Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and improvement processes for the team.
- Ensure accurate and reliable calculations and documentation for all benefit activities.
- Maintain strong relationships with members, auditors, and internal stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred with an analytical focus, or equivalent business experience of five (5) years.
- Minimum of 5 years in a Taft‑Hartley or collectively bargained environment, with at least 2 years managing a qualified pension plan and support staff.
- Expertise in benefit calculations, QDROs, ERISA, and related IRS/DOL codes.
- Working knowledge of pension benefit plans and benefits administration systems.
- Advanced Excel skills and background in programming/testing software.
- Strong management and leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and motivate a team.
- Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, persuasive manner.
- Adaptability, accountability, and a positive, self‑motivated work ethic.
Hours: Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm (may require Saturdays if necessary).
