Position: CENTRAL STERILE TECH - FT Evenings
Location: Gibson City

General Summary

Purpose is to prepare, track, and sterilize equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepares sterile trays and supplies for all areas of the hospital and outside physician facilities. Assists internal and external customers. Sorts, loads, unloads and decontaminates equipment and instruments according to hospital procedure. Assembles trays, basin sets, packages, instruments and equipment and prepares them for sterilization.

Performs quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly. Inspects equipment, instruments and packaging for cleanliness, defects and/or malfunctions. Documents sterilization cycle. Labels products with sterilization date. Performs other duties as assigned or required by supervisor.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities
  • Uses PPE appropriately.
  • Transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital procedures.
  • Organizing, containing, transporting contaminated instruments/equipment.
  • Use of sterilization supplies, equipment and instruments.
  • Sterilization procedures of various equipment and instruments.
  • Wrapping and repackaging of instruments for sterilization.
  • Identifying and arranging instruments in surgical trays.
  • Possess knowledge of decontamination procedures in OR and other necessary departments throughout the hospital and outside facilities.
  • Order and restock necessary supplies to be used in Central Sterilization.
  • Verifies the content, quantity and condition of instruments and equipment.
  • Performs routine custodial duties to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Disassembly and reassembly of instruments/equipment for decontamination.
  • Monitor the sterilization process and inspect sterilized items.
  • Daily sterilizer maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and report equipment failure to supervisor.
  • Completes counts sheets accurately.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with others.
