Location: Union Town

Performs a wide range of clerical and technical functions in support of the pharmacy department in those aspects that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. Functions in accordance with established guidelines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and assists supervisor or manager in supporting the pharmacy department, including coordination of scheduling, orienting and training new employees, and leading specific divisions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, Experience, and/or Licensure:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:
      • MD:
        Pharmacy Technician Student Permit or Pharmacy Technician License through Maryland Board of Pharmacy
      • OH:
        Pharmacy Technician Trainee License or Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy
      • PA:
        Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy
      • WV:
        Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy
      • Remote workers:
        Must additionally hold Pharmacy Technician Trainee License or Pharmacy Technician License issued by state of residence.
    • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health career Association (NHA) or obtain within 15 months of hire.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of pharmacy experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized pharmacy experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assigns, coordinates, and monitors the workflow of Pharmacy Technicians to provide efficient drug distribution.
  • Routinely evaluates technician responsibilities and distributes duties in an efficient and equitable manner.
  • Coordinates technician projects and assignments with pharmacy managers to achieve hospital and department goals.
  • Assists in the education and training of pharmacy technicians.
  • Conducts and documents technician departmental orientation and training; coordinates orientation in all pharmacy service areas.
  • Assists with annual technician competency assessments and implements improvements when necessary.
  • Coordinates continuing education programs for pharmacy technicians in the department.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external, accredited technician training programs.
  • Completes department work schedule as needed.
  • Performs the essential duties of a pharmacy technician when scheduled to staff and/or when working an open shift.
  • Follows up to ensure that requested projects are completed properly.
  • Identifies and completes projects and initiatives independently or with minimal oversight of management.
  • Certain duties cannot be assigned to Pharmacy Technicians because these duties must be performed by pharmacists; these restrictions are regulated at state and federal levels and must be followed closely, including:
    • Only pharmacists can receive oral prescriptions from prescribers or prescribers’ authorized designees.
    • Only pharmacists can consult with prescribers or prescribers’ designees about patients’ prescriptions.
    • Only pharmacists can provide confidential patient information to other health professionals or insurance companies.
    • Only pharmacists can check medications before dispensing them to patients.
    • Only pharmacists can consult with patients about prescribed medication use and other health issues.
    • Only pharmacists can screen for and recommend over‑the‑counter medications.
  • Independently prepares, processes, and reprocesses patient prescriptions and billing.
  • Follows up with third parties on rejected paid claims prior to authorizations.
  • Works and coordinates with care managers and patients on patient’s financial challenges and ensures follow‑up with care management regarding patient access to lower‑cost drugs.
  • Leads and/or assists in the coordination of various clinical initiatives.
  • Assists in troubleshooting and problem solving of pharmacy software.
  • Conjointly with Manager, establishes schedule for technical/clerical personnel to assure adequate staffing.
  • Coordinates adjustments in staffing due to unexpected/unforeseen changes in staffing.
