Job SummaryHistotechnologist I — Perform complex activities in the preparation of tissue for microscopic examination for the Dermatopathology Laboratory. Place tissues in fixative solution to stabilize and prevent decay. Section sample blocks with a microtome. Select stain and staining procedure to highlight the feature of interest. The Immunodermatology Laboratory, a clinical diagnostic laboratory, seeks a highly motivated individual to join the team.
Focus, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask are critical. This position involves handling various tissue specimens, cutting for microscopic analyses, performing different immunoassays, supporting testing, reporting, laboratory functions and transmission of results. Performs special staining and complex procedures necessary in preparing specimens of human or animal tissue for diagnoses. This is a patient-sensitive role with vaccination requirements or approved exemptions prior to first day of work.
We require immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy, with limited exemptions for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs.

Responsibilities- Processing and proper handling of all specimens received in the laboratory in preparation for pathologist review and diagnosis
- Perform testing, including routine, special, immunohistochemical, and/or immunofluorescence stains
- Prepare stains, reagents, and solutions according to standard procedures
- Perform microtomy to render quality sections for diagnoses
- Label, enter, and track specimens and slides in the LIS (Laboratory Information System)
- Adhere to laboratory policies, procedures, and SOPs
- Maintain laboratory work areas and perform preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment
- Adhere to University PROMISE Standards and HIPAA guidelines
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols per the Chemical Hygiene Plan, including PPE and proper waste handling
- Comply with accrediting and regulatory requirements (CLIA and CAP)
Education and Experience: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalent) plus 2 years of directly related work experience or a master’s (or equivalent) degree. This is an entry-level position in the General Professional track.
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Preferred QualificationsMeets CLIA minimum education requirements. Acceptable combinations of education and coursework include:
- Associate degree in chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology
- Education equivalence to at least 60 semester hours with specified medical laboratory/science coursework (details may apply)
