Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.
Responsibilities- Room patients and collect pertinent information regarding chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation.
- Obtain and document vital signs.
- Conduct medication reconciliation and update patient records in the EMR.
- Complete telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities.
- Gather and maintain patient information via telephone following department policies and procedures.
- Manage daily patient messages and in-basket communications.
- Perform patient check-in and check-out processes.
- Schedule appointments and coordinate referrals and diagnostic testing.
- Verify insurance benefits and obtain prior authorizations.
- Assist with office administrative duties and daily department operations.
- Assist providers with patient flow and clinical procedures.
- Perform point-of-care testing and document results.
- Administer medications according to provider orders and within scope of practice.
- Assist with prescription refills following department protocols.
- Call prescriptions into pharmacies, notify patients of refills, and document actions in the EMR.
- Provide patients with written instructions regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care as directed by providers.
- Retrieve and provide condition‑specific patient education materials as directed by providers.
- Perform urine catheterizations and bladder scanning.
- Remove sutures and staples.
- Apply and remove casts under provider direction.
- Read negative TB skin test results and refer patients with potential positive findings to nursing staff.
- Perform other diagnostic testing at the point of care.
- Maintain competencies related to point‑of‑care testing, equipment handling, and specialty‑specific training.
- Complete department tasks such as sterilizer duties, linen collection, stocking supplies, and maintaining clinical readiness.

- Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) - National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - National Health career Association (NHA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) (within 30 days)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Allied Health (AAH)
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
