Crime Analyst

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Crime Analyst to research, analyze, and prepare crime data, statistics, and reports. Responsibilities include locating, compiling, and analyzing crime data from computer databases to identify patterns, assist with identifying or targeting suspects, and patrolling problem areas. The successful applicant will collect and analyze statistical information using surveys and recognized quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques, review, analyze, and disseminate crime reports, and create and maintain computer databases, spreadsheets, and graphical displays using appropriate software.

This is a non‑exempt position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Locate, compile, and analyze crime and traffic data from computer databases to identify patterns and assist with suspect targeting and patrol planning.
  • Collect and analyze statistical information using surveys and recognized quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.
  • Review, analyze, and disseminate crime and traffic reports.
  • Prepare and disseminate reports on crime and traffic data and trends for department staff and other law‑enforcement agencies.
  • Create and maintain computer databases, spreadsheets, and graphical displays using appropriate software.
  • Prepare graphical reports and displays on crime and traffic data using computer applications, graphs, charts, diagrams, and maps.
  • Work with the public information officer to develop information for the media as necessary.
  • Collect and compile criminal intelligence information and record data, reports, or records of criminal intelligence.
  • Prepare reports for Freedom of Information Act requests.
  • Attend and present oral and written briefings on the results of criminal incidents or intelligence analysis during staff briefings.
  • Prepare and conduct citizen and other surveys.
  • Prepare composites of suspects involved in criminal activity, as requested by investigators.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a four‑year college or university with a major in statistics, business administration, public administration, geography, criminal justice or a related field.
  • One to three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of SQL and GIS preferred.
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, and documents.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Mathematical skills in probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Reasoning ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Physical ability to use hands, stand, sit, walk, and lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Adaptability to a quiet work environment and the ability to adjust visual focus.
