Job Overview
Support safe, efficient barge loading through hands‑on work that directly keeps operations running smoothly. This general laborer position performs a wide variety of duties based on daily needs of the operation, including cleaning and repair of barges.
Key Responsibilities- Participate in the company safety program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
- Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations and wear appropriate PPE.
- Read drafts, open/close lids, tie off barges, and perform other deckhand tasks.
- Load barges to meet draft and quality requirements and oversee deckhand(s) when required.
- Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate location, maintain grain quality during storage or transfer.
- Document all tasks timely, accurately, and legibly.
- Complete general clean‑up tasks such as sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and housekeeping.
- Perform preventative maintenance and/or repairs as needed.
- Possibly unload barges, clean barges, move product to storage, load trucks with heavy equipment, load rail, operate dryers, and other equipment based on facility.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- No experience required. Preferred: 1 year of experience in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
- Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to complete documentation requirements.
- Follow directions and use logical thought process to interpret oral and written instructions and troubleshoot problems.
- Work independently and within a team.
- Use tools appropriate for the assigned task.
- Provide excellent customer service internally and externally.
Requires ability to balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, squat, climb stairs and ladders, stand, walk, lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs occasionally, work in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid conditions, and in confined spaces. Must wear PPE, participate in PFT and fit testing, meet FRA and DOT testing if applicable. Ability to work rotating 12‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed.
