Optics Fabrication Machinist

Job Overview

The Optics Fabrication Machinist in the X-ray Science Division of the Advanced Photon Source will schedule and fulfill the APS Optics Group and customer work, machining X-ray optical components of varied dimensions, shapes, materials, and tolerances.

• Coordinate with the APS Optics Group and customers to fabricate components using grinding, lapping, ultrasonic milling, and polishing techniques.
• Provide advanced technical support for optical manufacturing and solve complex fabrication and testing problems under minimal direction.
• Direct or perform phases of optical work based on blueprints, specifications, sketches, and verbal or written instructions.
• Complete work order documentation, record time spent on customer forms, and return documents promptly after work completion.
• Set up, operate, and maintain optics fabrication machine tools, including grinding and polishing equipment.
• Maintain updated knowledge of materials, developments, and best practices in the field.
• Perform miscellaneous duties and other tasks as requested by shop management.

• Experience machining crystalline materials (silicon, germanium, sapphire) and advanced ceramics, as well as metals.
• Knowledge of strain‑free polishing techniques for crystal optical components used in X‑ray synchrotron beamlines.
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with people at all levels.
• Demonstrated ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

• Basic knowledge of CAD and ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and tolerancing.
• Basic dimensional and surface metrology skills.
• Experience in CNC machining.

Pay Range: $50.52–$50.82 per hour (general guideline; final offer depends on qualifications and responsibilities).
