Job SummaryPerforms pressing dry cleaning work which involves shaping and pressing of garments and articles by operation of steam press machines and hand irons. Also assists in dry cleaning wearing apparel and other articles.
Duties and Responsibilities- Presses dry cleaned garments or articles such as wool, silk and other fabrics (e.g., pants, coats, dresses, gowns, military uniforms, shirts) utilizing available pressers.
- Gets proper pressing lay on presses such as utility puff ironer, topper, garment form and steam cabinet for removal of wrinkles from dresses and coats.
- Reshapes pleats and creases apparel to intended size, shape and appearance.
- Removes wrinkles and retains shape without shrinking, stretching or otherwise damaging garment.
- Assists in sorting and pressing wet garments using an automatic spreader.
- Folds ironed flatwork using a folding table and places in stacks of prescribed numbers.
- Counts items, wraps and labels for pick‑up delivery.
- Assists in sorting incoming garments for dry cleaning by color and removes lint.
- Weighs garments for proper cleaning and places in washers according to the machine capacity.
- Mixes detergent and places in machine following established instructions.
- Prepares hangers for garments cleaned.
- Maintains working area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Works under the general supervision of a designated supervisor who determines assignments.
- Follows established guidelines and instructions for work.
- Refers problems to supervisor for resolution.
- Work is reviewed through spot checks for cleanliness, quality, neatness and patron satisfaction.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.
- PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Requires continuous standing with constant movement of arms and feet while adjusting garments and operating presses. - WORKING CONDITIONS:
Laundries are usually noisy, hot and humid. Pressers are constantly exposed to possible burns from presses.
Twelve months experience performing work involving the operation of garment steam press machines and hand irons.
Substitution of Education for ExperienceOne year of high school education may be substituted for three months of experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for twelve months of experience.
Physical RequirementsPressing work requires continuous standing with constant movement of arms and feet while adjusting garments and operating presses.
